Healthy Living

On 18th March 2010 pupils from Year 5 visited Selby Abbey Leisure Centre as a part of their Science Unit on Healthy Living.

Working with Robin Bedford, Sports Development Officer at Selby Abbey Leisure, pupils learnt about different food types and their function, identified good and poor food choices, and that that to stay healthy we need an adequate and varied diet.

Working with James Chapman, Inclusion Officer at Selby Abbey Leisure, pupils learnt that we need exercise to stay healthy and to maintain our muscles, and that when we exercise our muscles work harder.

Working in the Fitness Suite at Selby Abbey Leisure Centre pupils had the opportunity to try a range of cardiovascular equipment.  Pupils learnt how to measure their pulse rate and relate it to their heart beat, and investigated the effect of exercise on their heart beat.

Brayton Junior School would like to thank Robin Bedford and all the staff at Selby Abbey Leisure Centre for providing our pupils with this opportunity.

Riding Lights

On Monday 8th December the Riding Lights made its annual visit to Brayton School. They gave an excellent performance of the Nativity Story, with a favourite character…Desmond the Camel. The pupils were a superb audience and it really gave us festive cheer, as well as reminding us of the true meaning of Christmas.

Great North Air Ambulance Service

On 17th March 2010 pupils from Year 5 were visited by Peter Stead from The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).  The Great North Air Ambulance Service provides air ambulance cover across the North of England and have responded to many incidents in North Yorkshire.

Would you know what to do if you came across a person who was unconscious and not breathing?  Pupils learnt to skills required to react to this situation and deliver CPR.  Peter brought along several dummies to enable pupils to practice the steps/techniques required to respond to a serious incident.

Brayton Junior School would like to thank Peter Stead and The Great North Air Ambulance Service for providing our pupils with this opportunity.

On 24th February 2010 pupils from Year 5 went on a Residential Trip to Robinwood at Dobroyd Castle in Todmorden.  The experience challenged pupils to overcome their fears, try adventurous activities for the first time, to communicate with each other, and support and encourage each other within individual and group activities.  The activities included: Giant Swing; Knights Quest; Piranha Pool; Night Line; Crate Challenge; Climbing and Abseiling; Zip Wire; Archery; Obstacle Course; Canoeing; Trapeze and Caving.

We have been really impressed by the writing produced by the children upon their return.
